We were commissioned to create a series of film posters for the movie Battle of the Sexes. In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (portrayed by Emma Stone) and ex-men’s champion and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (played by Steve Carell) was billed as the ‘Battle of the Sexes’ and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world.
READ MORE +For the theatrical marketing campaign, PlanetFab took an unconventional and conceptually rich approach that went beyond promotional imagery. Our goal was to create a suite of poster designs that not only captured the essence of the film’s 1970s setting and tennis backdrop but also embodied the deeper societal tensions and gender conflicts at its core.
We began by immersing ourselves in the era, studying the visual motifs, cultural movements, and shifting gender dynamics that defined that period. This allowed us to develop a versatile visual language that spanned styles.
Central to each campaign was the interplay of typography and striking graphic elements with intentional color palettes and stylistic choices to reinforce the different concepts.
In crafting each poster, we aimed to evoke not just the nostalgia of the era, but also the enduring relevance of the film’s themes in today’s society.
