When a photographer like Thomas Rusch arrives at your doorstep with a collection of images so striking, you know you’re holding something extraordinary in your hands. As we delved into these vibrant beauty shots while preparing for CITY Magazine’s Fall Travel Issue, we were awed by their rich textures and mesmerizing patterns, which transported us to another world entirely.

These studio-captured images bore an uncanny resemblance to breathtaking aerial vistas. The colors, contours, and the interplay of light and shadow evoked a sense of gazing down upon our beautiful planet from above. This sparked the concept for our story: input precise coordinates into Google Earth, then zoom in and out until we found ourselves virtually hovering above landscapes like the Maldives, the Great Salt Lake, and the rugged terrain of Mt. Krakatau.

The similarities were astonishing—a perfect mirror of the sun-drenched shores of the Maldives, the shimmering, salt-encrusted expanse of the Great Salt Lake. We realized we had stumbled upon something special: a visual journey that blurred the lines between the micro and the macro, a nod to the wonders of our planet. It was a beauty story designed to transport you to the far reaches of the globe, all without ever leaving the ground.
